New Visa For Remote Workers

On 30 of October it became possible to apply for a new visa for remote workers, allowing residence in Portugal for a period of up to 1 year, which can be renewed for the same period.

What does it consist of?

At a time when companies are still adapting to the changes imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, namely with regard to working practices, teleworking or remote working has become an increasingly common modality.

Given this new reality, it is now possible for an individual to work for a company remotely, without being located in the company’s country. In this sense, several countries have adapted their legislation in order to facilitate and attract specialised workers and Portugal is no exception.

Since 30 October it has been possible to request a new visa for remote workers, also known as “digital nomads”, from outside the European Union or the European Economic Area. This measure aims to facilitate the entry of these workers into Portugal. Up until now, this was achieved mainly through the D7 visa or the tourist visa.

Requirements when applying for the visa

The application must contain a document proving the average monthly income earned in the last 3 months with a minimum value corresponding to 4 times the Portuguese national minimum wage (705€), which translates into 2820€ and also a document proving the fiscal residence.

In addition to these two proofs, it is also necessary to prove the existence of an employment relationship or a contract for the provision of services, depending on the professional situation of the applicant.

For example, in the case of dependent workers, they should present one of the following documents:

  • Employment contract
  • Promise of employment contract
  • Statement of the employer proving the employment relationship

Self-employed workers, on the other hand, must present one of the following documents:

  • Contract of service provision
  • Written proposal for a service contract
  • Document demonstrating services rendered to one or more entities
